Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, a fess rompu nebuly to chief Argent, in base a caltrap of the like.  Attached above the shield from a wreath Or and Azure, a lion's head erased Or collared four fusils Gules.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver scroll inscribed "OUR GUARD IS UP" in Black letters.

Symbolism
Teal blue and white are the colors used for Branch Unassigned (previously used for Aviation units).  The three sections of the fess signify New Jersey, the third state to ratify the Constitution; and also allude to the cities of Trenton, Elizabeth and Morristown, New Jersey, the homesites of the organization.  The caltrap simulates a stylized aircraft in flight.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 30 April 1964.  It was rescinded on 17 January 1975.
